DESCRIPTION:
Through the lens of the NDT Contemporary Practice Model, clinicians will expand their understanding of theory, kinesiology, typical development, clinical reasoning, and intervention strategies. The focus of this 12 hours of content will be on the development of participation in upper extremity function, grasp, and manipulation in human occupations across diverse contexts. Clinicians un-interested in the full advanced certification process are welcome to attend the virtual series as a stand-alone learning.
Therapists who work with children experiencing neurological challenges will benefit from this intense 6-day learning experience that is a hybrid in its delivery. This course is designed to support NDT practitioners to the highest level, combining lectures, labs, video presentations, hands-on demonstrations, and practicums with children. The focus of the content will be on the development of upper extremity use, grasp, and manipulation as it connects to the trunk and lower extremities in daily function.
The participants’ individual learning experiences and outcomes are paramount; this is a chance to deepen your practice with the children you serve at both the technical and interpersonal level. This advanced workshop is for C/NDT therapists seeking advanced clinical skills. This advanced course is designed for either:
- Physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists who work with individuals’ post-stroke and/or brain injury
- OR
- Physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists who work with children with cerebral palsy or other neuromuscular disorders
OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Develop an appreciation for the neurobiology of upper extremity function.
- Identify significant anatomical, kinesiological and develop mental characteristics of the head, neck, spine, rib cage, shoulder girdle complex and upper extremities.
- Evaluate typical motions of the upper extremity.
- Observe, analyze, and evaluate effective and ineffective posture and movement of the head, neck and trunk as they impact a client’s functional abilities/limitations in relation to upper extremity function.
- Analyze atypical movement patterns throughout the body and determine impairments that interfere with upper extremity function.
- Construct effective treatment strategies that address primary impairments interfering with efficient use of the upper extremity during functional activities.
- Analyze the interaction between oral motor, upper extremity and lower extremity impairments as they specifically impact upper extremity function.
