DESCRIPTION:
Introductory level of learning will be offered. This two-hour lecture is designed for PTs, OTs and therapists working with children who experience chronic pain. The purpose of the lecture is to provide therapists with the knowledge, understanding, and tools to be able to start guiding their patients to improved function and increased participation. 

OBJECTIVES:  Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Give a basic explanation of chronic pain and co-occurring diagnoses. 
  • Describe how chronic pain presents in pediatric patients.
  • Be able to recognize hypermobility in pediatric patients.
  • Know primary diagnoses that will present with hypermobility in pediatrics.
  • Explain general treatment philosophies and strategies for chronic pain and hypermobility.
  • Be able to identify and use treatment tools to help in managing these patients. 

PRESENTER: Andrea Webster, PT, C/NDT

Andrea Webster PT, DPT, C/NDT is a physical therapist at Mary Bridge Children’s Therapy Unit in Puyallup with more than 10 years of pediatric experience. Andrea graduated with her DPT from the MGH Institute of Health Professions in 2010. As a portion of her PT program, she completed a 1-year internship at Children’s Hospital Boston with 6 months of that time spent in the Pediatric Pain Rehabilitation Center. After graduation Andrea spent 3 years practicing in outpatient orthopedics with pediatric and adult patients prior to transitioning to Mary Bridge Children’s Therapy Puyallup in 2013. Andrea has taught as adjunct faculty at Green River Community College since 2021, teaching pediatrics as a portion of the PTA program’s advanced neurology course. She also has been certified in NDT since 2016 and has assisted with NDT courses through CTU. She has a particular interest in the interplay between the neurological, musculoskeletal, and sensory systems and how awareness of that interplay can positively impact patient outcomes.

Post Test: Professionals will complete a Post Test (with a passing score of 70% or better) prior to receiving Certificate.
