DESCRIPTION:
This two day course will cover pelvic floor issues for the child from birth through adolescence. Normal development of the bowel and bladder will be discussed as well as neurological control of bowel and bladder. Common neurological developmental problems will be discussed as well as their effect on the bowel, bladder, and pelvic floor. The treatment of the child with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, autism will be discussed from both the point of view of a pediatric developmental therapist and as a pelvic floor physiotherapist. Participants will also learn the typical physiotherapy treatment techniques for pediatric pelvic floor patients. Basic principles of biofeedback will be discussed as well as the applications of biofeedback for treating the pediatric population. Labs will consist of biofeedback training and developmental treatment of the pediatric population.
OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

Participants will be able to describe the typical development of the infant bladder.

Participants will be able to identify several toilet training strategies for children with developmental disabilities

Participants will be able to describe the different types of adolescent pelvic pain.

Participants will be able to assemble a physical therapy treatment plan for a typically developing or neurologically involved child for bowel or bladder issues.

Participants will be able to assess the proper way to interview both typically developing and neurologically involved children.

PRESENTER: Carina Siracusa, PT, DPT, WCS
Dr. Carina Siracusa graduated from physical therapy school at Ohio University in 2005 with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy. She went on to work as a pediatric physical therapist at Genesis Outpatient Rehabilitation in Zanesville, Ohio where she treated a variety of congenital and acquired conditions in children from ages birth to 18. Her primary caseload at this time consisted of mostly neurologic conditions. In 2009 she completed her coursework in both Obstetric and Pelvic Physical Therapy from the APTA Section on Women
