Infectious Disease and Virology
When your child is sick with an infection, very often their regular pediatrician can take care of them and make them well. But, sometimes, an infection requires specialized treatment.
In those cases, pediatricians and families can relay on Mary Bridge Children's Infectious Diseases service.
Our team of experts offers comprehensive services on a referral basis for infants, children and adolescents with infections, including diagnosis, treatment, consulting and education. We can also evaluate recurrent unexplained fevers as well as concerns regarding possible immunodeficiencies.
Who We Are
Mary Bridge Children's Infectious Diseases specialists are doctors who are board certified in both General Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases, reflecting years of additional training after medical school in these specialties.
We are committed to working together with pediatricians and families to diagnose and prescribed treatment for children whose illness or infection requires the expertise of infectious diseases specialists.
How We Help
Many childhood illnesses are due to infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites and can be difficult to diagnose or treat. Historically, antibiotics were frequently prescribed in many of these cases. However, inappropriate use of antibiotics has led to a crisis of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the United States
Research has shown involving infectious disease specialists in managing complicated infections reduces unnecessary and expensive antibiotic use. Additionally, infectious diseases specialists are trained to recognize and treat unusual or severe infections in healthy children, and difficult-to-control infections in children with compromised immune systems.
Our team offers the care and pediatric expertise needed to manage pediatric infections closely and effectively — including antibiotic therapy management — in both inpatient and outpatient settings. We partner with home infusion services to provide outpatient intravenous antibiotics when needed. We also partner with many other specialty services at Mary Bridge Children's, including Orthopedics, Surgery and others, in treating infections.
